Saint-Ours Bas museum

A submarine in the mountains

Frontier valley and stopping-off point for travellers, the Ubaye valley has changed hands seventeen times since the 14th century.

Its defensive lines have varied according to the will of history.

The most recent being the Alpine section of the Maginot Line, of which this fort was part and saw service in the Second World War.

It’s difficult to imagine how life would have been in this structure of concrete and steel where everything was designed for selfsufficiency and which was classified as a heritage site in 2001.
